Statement From LSU Coach Van Chancellor On The Legendary Coach John Wooden

“When I was in the WNBA, Ann Meyers Drysdale took me to his house and I spent nearly a full day with Coach Wooden. To this day, that remains one of the greatest moments of my life. I don’t know of anyone that has influenced the game of basketball more than he has. His influence as a coach and a person is legendary. He was a coach who appreciated women’s basketball and he was an advocate of women’s basketball. Everyone in our profession admired him and appreciated him for what he did for our game. He was the epitome of how everyone should live their lives, with class, dignity and helping others."
-- LSU head coach Van Chancellor, June 5, 2010 on the passing of legendary Hall of Fame coach John Wooden

Saying good-bye to a special supporter

Annette Harland, 66, of Traverse City, Mich., and formerly of Manistee, Mich., and St. Gabriel, passed away after a 16-month battle with Lou Gehrig's disease. While living in Louisiana, Annette quickly grew to love the LSU Lady Tiger basketball team. With great enthusiasm and devotion, she followed the team through their latest season. In January 2010, she was invited to fulfill her dream of sitting with the team on the Tiger bench and visiting the team locker room for both the pre- and post-game activities. Annette was an amazing supporter of our program. We looked forward to seeing her each basketball season when she made her journey south.  We feel so blessed to have known her and continue to keep her and her family in our prayers.

Thoughts and prayers to the Zappe family

The LSU Lady Tiger Basketball program lost a friend yesterday in Ron Zappe, the found of Zapp's Potato Chips.  I first got to meet Ron personally when he came on board to become the first official sponsor of Pack the PMAC.  He was full of enthusiasm and ideas -- you could quickly see why he was so successful in business and in life.  Our thoughts and prayers go out today to the Zappe family.

Order one of Meek's calenders to support the HOPE Foundation

To highlight a concentrated effort on bringing fans closer to the WNBA Champion, the WNBA and the endeavors of the foundation, H.O.P.E. created a commemorative calendar specifically for the WNBA season. After winning the championship and establishing her off-the-court brand, Temeka Johnson continues to find ways to interact with the communities across the world. The calendar will help fundraising efforts for the foundation, as all proceeds benefit the foundation. With the goal of raising $25,000 by December 2010 for the Jewel Johnson Scholarship Fund, the Mercurial Champion is starting the season off with her “Face of HOPE” calendar. The calendar is a mixture of on the court (WNBA and overseas) and off the court imagery related to Temeka. The 11x17 full color calendars are available for $20, and the first 50 will be autographed by Meek.

Heaven Opens People’s Eyes (H.O.P.E.) was launched during the summer of 2008. The foundation was established by WNBA player, Temeka Johnson, to provide H.O.P.E. to people across the world. HOPE’s goal is to inspire youth, families and communities to reach their own goals and objectives and lead a more emotionally healthy lifestyle. www.MeeksHOPE.org for more information!
