Night Before Team Meeting

BOB STARKEY (12-2-09):

Ever wonder what the team does the night before a road game? One of the things we do is meet in a room to go over the game plan for our next opponent. We give our players written scouting reports that they are expected to know. Sometimes in these "night-before" meetings we will actually give our team a pop quiz to make sure they know their reports. We always watch a scouting video on our opponent that lasts about 15 minutes and then show a motivational video for our team. The evening always ends with Coach Chancellor addressing the team on key points for the upcoming game.

Lady Tiger edge Louisiana Tech

Media_http4bpblogspot_ajrga
RUSTON, La. -- LSU preseason All-American guard Allison Hightower poured in a career-high 32 points – 25 in the first half – and the seventh-ranked LSU women’s basketball team held off a last-second shot attempt from Louisiana Tech to remain unbeaten by a score of 77-74 on Wednesday night in front of 4,244 fans at Thomas Assembly Center.

LSU improved to 6-0 for the first time since winning the first 14 games of the 2005-06 season. The Lady Tigers also defeated a Louisiana opponent for the 31st straight time. LSU has not lost to an in-state opponent since 1999.

“This was a tremendous team win for this basketball team,” LSU head coach Van Chancellor said. “They scored 46 points on us in the second half and nobody has done that in quite awhile against us. (Shanavia) Dowdell had 26 points for them, and she was outstanding. Allison Hightower played like an All-American today. That first half was as good as I’ve seen her.”

Speaking At The Jack Andonie LSU Sports Museum

Media_http4bpblogspot_qksza
VAN CHANCELLOR (11-28-09):
Following practice today I had the privilege of speaking at the Jack Andonie Museum. If you have not visited it is an amazing museum full of LSU athletic history with items donated by Dr. Andonie. It doesn't matter what sport at LSU you enjoy, it is well represented at the museum. As always, I great enjoyed chatting with the LSU fans that are on campus getting ready for the football game this afternoon. I always feel blessed to meet such enthusiastic fans like the ones at LSU.

Breaking in Our New Practice Facility

VAN CHANCELLOR (11-28-09):

We had a normal early morning practice sessions today. Generally we like to go early on Saturday, like our 10 AM start today, so the team can get out and enjoy the football game. Today's practice was a normal practice with a little video to start, our pre-practice period to work on fundamentals and then some more part and whole-method work to prepared for our next game. But one thing was extremely different...we worked out for the first time in our new practice facility! We are so appreciative of the LSU administration, specifically Skip Bertman for getting it started and Eddie Nunez for seeing it through. It's going to mean so much to our program both in terms of our players have a great resource to improve as well as it being important to recruiting.

LSU Staff Becomes Holiday Helpers

Media_http2bpblogspot_dybsy
COACH LANDERS (11--25-09):

Our staff is "thankful" today to volunteer with Holiday Helpers Inc. This is an amazing organization that puts on three major events each year, at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Today our staff helped serve meals at the 23rd Annual "Thanksgiving Together" at the Baton Rouge River Center. There was such a great spirit there from everyone at the River Center and it was a huge crowd of volunteers and participants. One ironic story is that Coach Starkey had told us last night on the bus ride back from Tulane was that Seimone Augustus would always volunteer to help at this event, even when she was in high school. So who do you think showed up today? Seimone and her parents! Obviously, the Augustus family cares greatly about the Baton Rouge community. Our staff hopes that wherever you might be that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Meek Giving HOPE

A great article in the Times-Picayune by Ryan Chatelain on Temeka Johnson and her HOPE Foundation:

"I think it's important for the kids to know that being a star athlete is not all about the glamour," said Johnson, who won an award from the WNBA in June for her community work and currently is playing in Israel. "I want to be visible enough for them to see that you still have to be a human. You still have to have great character. You still have to be a role model. It's not about the nice cars and the nice rims and all that kind of stuff.

"Plus, I'm from the exact same environment they're from, and I want them to see that you can make it."

Each year, the foundation "adopts" a school. Johnson meets with educators to learn about the school's needs, then raises money to address those shortcomings. Last month, the foundation adopted Washington Montessori School in Kenner.

Johnson's grandmother, Jewel Johnson, who died of cancer in 2008, inspired Temeka Johnson's work with schools. Jewel Johnson was a longtime teacher at Washington, and HOPE named its four scholarships in her honor.

"Education is important, and the kids of today are really our future," Johnson said. "It seems like the education system is falling and dropping lower and lower each year, and kids are not caring about education as much. So I just want to do anything that I can to express the importance of education."
