Game Day: Tweet-Tweet

Media_http3bpblogspot_zhisy
BOB STARKEY (11-9-09):
A reminder that I will again be twittering about our team all day today as we prepare and compete against Centenary. One of the things we will do this year is actually tweet before, during and after our games. I will give you some insight into what is going on behind the scenes before the game. Find out about Coach Chancellor's pre-game talk. Any injury or line-up updates? You will find them following me on twitter before any place else. Half-time adjustments will be tweeted as well as post game thoughts. We are working hard to find a way to create even greater interest in our program though as many social media outlets as possible. In fact, tomorrow we will unviel a facebook page entirely dedicated to Lady Tiger Basketball. Until, please feel free to follow me on twitter at:

Partying with the Bengal Belles!

Media_http1bpblogspot_iqmkd
VAN CHANCELLOR (11-14-09):
I know I keep repeating the same concept, but in my less than three years as LSU women's basketball coach, I continue to be overwhelmed by the intense support of the LSU fans. There is not a more enthusiastic group than the Bengal Belles -- what an amazing organization! Not only does this group of women show their support but they back it up with work -- doing so much for all of our sports. One thing I learned very quickly is that the Bengal Belles are a powerful component to the success mechanism at LSU and I've enjoyed getting to know them. Yesterday I got to be a part of a homecoming festivity where we drove around in golf carts and passed out beads. It was a lot of fun.

BREC Coaching Clinic

Media_http1bpblogspot_guhgc
COACH STARKEY (11-13-09):

One of the great things that has happened over the past few years is out joint relationship with BREC. One of the things I've discovered is the massive amount of programs that BREC sponsors and the tremendous commitment on behalf of their staff to create an environment of excellence in all areas. This summer we did a huge clinic for BREC at the Baton Rouge Sports Academy which was good for BREC but was also a wonderful opportunity for our team to be involved in a community program. Last night our coaching staff put on a clinic for the youth coaches in the BREC league and it was a wonderful evening with some very dedicated people that volunteer their time to work with young people. BREC gets it and we are proud to be a "friend' in their mission.

ERICA WILLIAMS (11-12-09):

I really enjoyed spending time and speaking to first the fifth grade students at Brookstown Elementary. I received a lot of love while I was there. The students were really into it and made me feel special. I talked to them about the importance of education and working hard at whatever it is they decide to do. Great experience!! Oh did I mention -- I was the first player to ride shotgun in the Van Wagon!! Be jealous!!!!!

Preview new Lady Tiger intro video

Media_http3bpblogspot_esgob
TOM HARLUKOWICZ (11-12-09):
One of my favorite projects to work on prior to each season is the team’s video that plays right before LSU’s introductions. This year was no different and I was very happy to debut this season’s video at Tuesday’s exhibition game versus Loyola.

The video, produced by Old Hat Creative based in Norman, Oklahoma, ties into this year’s “Jump on the Van Wagon” marketing campaign. If you didn’t get a chance to see it on the big screens in the Maravich Center on Tuesday, be sure to be in your seats early for Sunday’s home opener versus Centenary. The game is set to tip off at 2p.m. The video can also be seen by clicking the link below. I hope you enjoy it.

Van on the Bus

VAN CHANCELLOR (11-11-09):

Well I can imagine there were a lot of LSU students that were surprised this morning when they jumped on the bus and saw their women's basketball coach hanging out with them -- passing out snacks, giving away t-shirts and talking Lady Tiger Basketball. Our marketing genius Tom Harlukowicz signed me up to be a guest host on Tiger Trails which is our student transit system. And as has been the case with everything else this fall, Tom nailed it. I had a great time meeting and talking to the students. Going into my third year at LSU there is nothing that impressed me more than the spirit of this student body. LSU is a very special place and is so because of our students.

The LSU Lady Tigers are in elite company when it comes to the polls. Proof comes from Mel Greenburg and his research. Mel covers college and pro women’s basketball for the Philadelphia Inquirer, where he has worked for 38 years. Greenberg pioneered national coverage of the game, including the original Top 25 women's college poll. His knowledge has earned him nicknames such as "The Guru" and "The Godfather. He was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007.

BILL MARTIN (11/10/09)
FINAL
LSU 78, Loyola 43 ... Please check back for the complete game story coming soon.

8:34 p.m.
Adrienne Webb is showing her potential as she has connected for three 3-pointers. LSU leads 66-37 with 6:14 remaining in the contest. All of the Lady Tiger starters are now out of the game. Head coach Van Chancellor is letting some newcomers get their first action. On the floor now: Bianca Lutley, Erica Williams, Taylor Booze, Swayze Black and Jasmine Nelson. Booze has fired in a pair of 3-pointers. Hightower's night is over after 18 points on 8-of-13 from the field. LSU is currently holding Loyola to 34.4 percent shooting.

8:20 p.m.
LSU is cruising with a 51-33 lead with 11:47 to go in the game. The Lady Tigers are on a 17-8 run since the second half began. Hightower has found her rhythm and has 18 points. She has eight points this half. Freshman Adrienne Webb just drained her first career 3-pointer from the left wing.

7:55 p.m. - Halftime
Senior guard Allison Hightower and sophomore forward Courtney Jones each contributed 10 points as the ninth-ranked LSU Lady Tigers lead Loyola-New Orleans, 34-25, at halftime on an exhibition game Tuesday night at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. LSU closed the half with a 12-5 run, which featured six points from Hightower. LSU shot 43.2 percent (16-of-37) from the floor, while Loyola was 44.4 percent (8-of-18) from the field. Loyola committed 13 first-half turnovers, but remained in the contest with 12 points from NAIA All-American guard Trenell Smith.

7:38 p.m.
LSU holds its largest lead, 28-20, and is on a 6-0 run. Courtney Jones fired in a jumper from 8-feet, Barrett added a layup and Hightower delivered one of her patented left-handed runners through the lane. With 3:37 to play in the half, LSU has Hughes, Barrett, Graham, Hightower and Swayze Black on the floor.

7:30 p.m.
We have made it to the third official timeout with LSU holding a slim 20-17 lad with 7:50 to go in the first half. NAIA All-American Trenell Smith has accounted for 10 of Loyola's 17 points in the first 12 minutes. LSU has racked up eight steals and Courtney Jones is nearing double-digits with eight points. LaSondra Barrett came off the bench and delivered LSU's last bucket on a jumper through the lane. Freshman guard Adrienne Webb has just made her debut. Hightower, Eason, Jones, Turnbow and Webb are on the floor for the Lady Tigers.

7:18 p.m.
LSU holds a 6-4 lead but the first six minutes has been plagued with turnovers by both teams. Courtney Jones put the Lady Tigers on the board after an offensive rebound and putback. Allison Hightower later picked off a pass at the 16:30 mark and drove the length of the floor for an easy layup.

We are tomorrow what we are today

Media_http1bpblogspot_csryc
BOB STARKEY (11-10-09):
I thought I'd share an email I sent our team last night --

Lady Tigers:

I just posted a great quote on twitter and it made me think about us. Here’s the quote:

"How am I going to live today in order to create the tomorrow I'm committed to?"— Tony Robbins

It could be paraphrased a variety of ways:

"How am I going to practice today in order to be tomorrow the player I’m committed to be?”

Or…

“How are we going to work today in order to be the team we are committed to be in March.”

Comes back to what? WIN TODAY

Allison in charge

Media_http1bpblogspot_baccr
Nice article by Jim Varney on Allison in Times-Picayune:

There's little question that Hightower is in charge.

When she arrived from Texas as a somewhat gangly freshman, she was in awe of teammates like Fowles, who went to the Final Four every year in her LSU career and now is one of the top international players. Even then, however, Hightower's offensive capabilities were clear. In the NCAA regional final in Fresno, Calif., Hightower made critical 3-pointers as the Lady Tigers upset top-seeded Connecticut to advanced to the Final Four in Cleveland.

LSU returned to the Final Four in Hightower's sophomore season when the Lady Tigers upset No. 1 seed North Carolina in the regional final. But both of those trips ended in disappointment when the Lady Tigers lost in the semifinals. Now, after a junior campaign in which she averaged 14.9 points and led the team in six categories, Hightower is being asked to take LSU back to the NCAA Tournament.

"My role has changed from the days when I was just asked to shoot the ball, " Hightower said last week. "But while that's been a transition, I don't think that much has changed overall. My goals are still to play hard and lead by example."

Chancellor said his prize senior could not have handled either task better.

"It's pretty easy to coach when your best player is also your hardest worker, " he said.
