Ally, Boogie, Lady Tigers get high marks from SEC Coaches

Media_http4bpblogspot_cjcsj
More great news for Allison Hightower, LaSondra Barrett and the LSU Lady Tigers. The SEC Coaches Poll was released and again Ally was picked as the Pre-Season SEC Player of the Year with Boogie joining her on the First-Team All-SEC. Tennessee edged out LSU for the first place among the coaches.

“I think the voting shows what we thought all along – that this is going to be a tight race this season for the league title,” LSU head coach Van Chancellor said. “The conference race is up for grabs and anyone can win it. We like the position we are in, but we have to go out and earn it. There is no question in my mind we are getting better as a team every day.”

Zachary Rotary Club

VAN CHANCELLOR (10-28-09):

As the head coach of the LSU Lady Tigers, I get a lot of opportunities to speak to a variety of organizations. I am always humbled at the amazing love so many in this community have for LSU and Lady Tiger Basketball. Today I had the opportunity to speak at the Zachary Rotary Club -- a wonderful group of people. I made some new friends but the highlight was spending time with Lady Tiger alumnus April Brown. I've known April from her playing days back in Mississippi high school basketball and I've always been a big fan of hers. Coach Starkey always talks about what a smart players she was at LSU and I believe it when I watch her coach!

IN FOCUS: LEARNING TO LEAD

Media_http4bpblogspot_sgrkf
SPORTS INFORMATION DEPARTMENT (10-28-09):
Here's a sneak peak of an article that will run on Allison Hightower this weekend in the football game program written by Elizabeth Stuart in our Sports Information Department:

An all-encompassing force, women’s basketball senior Allison Hightower is the total package that runs the game on both ends of the court. Hightower blazes through the paint, launching a high arching jumper that stuns defenders, and with 76 blocked shots, the most-ever by an LSU guard, she presents an equal but opposite defensive challenge.

LSU coach Van Chancellor named Hightower the “face of the team” for the 2009-10 season, and it is a role for which Hightower’s predecessors groomed her well.

The Arlington, Texas native’s saga at LSU began in the fall of 2006. As a freshman, Hightower played alongside future WNBA stars Sylvia Fowles, Quianna Chaney and Erica White. The newcomer worked into the paint in all 38 games, and during her first season with the Lady Tigers, Hightower saw a Final Four appearance, the fourth-straight for the team. Watching the seasoned veterans, Hightower learned more than shooting techniques and how to work inside the lane.

“Sylvia always led by example on and off the court,” Hightower recalled. “I just wanted to one day be able to carry on and keep the legacy going.”

LOVE THAT TIGER SPIRIT

Media_http3bpblogspot_uliiw
COURTNEY JONES (10-28-09):
How lovely it is to be an LSU Tiger. Every Saturday during football season the fans show so much support. From tailgating all day to their pets. As we (the team) were making our way to the game we noticed this couple with these awesome looking dogs. What made them so special was that they had the words LSU and TIGERS in their fur. We were so amazed that we just had to take a picture. To me that shows a lot about them and that they really love LSU!

My First Boozar

TAYLOR BOOZE (10-27-09):

Tonight the Lady Tigers participated in the Boozar held in the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse. Kids came out dressed in their Halloween costumes and mask ready to meet and greet all the athletes, mainly to take the candy though! Their were some pretty nifty and creative costumes out there tonight, but none of them could top Coach Chancellors Elvis Presley imitation! I must say he was very impressive! Overall, It was a fun and positive enviroment for the kids.

ERICA WILLIAMS (10-27-09):

I really enjoyed the Boozar. I enjoy interacting with the children and seeing what creative costumes their parents come up with. We also had a guest appearance by the King, Elvis Presley (coach) it was really nice being able to hang out with the King and hand out candy to the kids putting a smile on their face!

Elvis is Alive!

Media_http3bpblogspot_wjsfo
BOB STARKEY (10-27-09):

The long mystery of Elvis' disappearance has been solved! He's been discovered in Baton Rouge under the cover of a women's basketball coach. Actually it's Coach Chancellor who dressed up for the LSU Athletic Department's Boozar. This traditional event has each of the athletic teams hosting a booth for children of the Baton Rouge community to come and trick or tweet in a safe environment. But it's hard to tell who has more fun -- the youngsters or the student-athletes. Too often it is overlooked how much work LSU Athletics and our coaches and students do to contribute to Baton Rouge overall. Without question, tonight was a huge success. And if I could speak for Coach Chancellor, "Thank you, thank you very much!"
