Honored to be captain

Media_http1bpblogspot_naoxc
NICCI KELLY (11-9-09):
I remember when the coaches called me over after practice one day and asked me, "How would you like to be co-captain of the team?" I smiled and thought what I couldn't get out of my mouth, "I would love too!"

I am truly humbled and honored to be one of this year's team captains for the upcoming basketball season. It is truly an exciting and responsible role to have. As a senior, I am reminded to "Win" everyday and give everything you have for that day, that moment, that minute, because you won't get it back. Being a Lady Tiger means so much and to share my senior year with my fellow teammates is a treasure I will hold for a lifetime. How much better would it be to add on to that treasure and reach levels together that we cannot do as individuals? It's as if we are set out to reach the "promised land" and only by faith and through the power of God will we reach it. I thank God for this commissioning to lead. One of the best things I have learned about being a captain is that leadership is not about positionship but its about personhood. For me, being a captain is not so much about dictating on the basketball court, but loving and interacting in the very livelihood of my teammates and being there for them in all circumstances. Yes, leadership is required on the court, but majority of the time everyone is accountable to be a leader on the court by communicating and doing what their role requires of them. However, I have already encountered many instances this year when my teammates needed more than direction on the basketball court, but encouragement and prayer for the loss of family members, dealing with injuries, or even help with homework and classes. It's amazing how now even as I deal with my own injury and watch my teammates practice, they are there for me in return to encourage and pray for me. I am truly ecstatic about our journey this year; my prayer is that we take each day by faith and "Win" the Lady Tiger Way!

ALLISON HIGHTOWER (11-8-09):
Hello Lady Tiger fans! Of course you may all know that is my last year. Being a senior on this team is something that I will always cherish, because I've learned so much throughout my career -- but i can say that i still have a lot to learn. So far I think that this off-season has been better than all the rest. The team and I have been working very hard improving everyday. We have also been having a great time with all the activities we have been involved in. Now it is finally time to start the season. As I head into my senior year I want to make sure that this is my best year. See you at the PMAC! GEAUX TIGERS!!

Doing the Autograph Thing

JASMINE NELSON (11-4-09):
I realize that I haven't been at LSU long -- I'm barely starting on my fifth month as a Lady Tiger -- but I've signed about a thousand autographs already! People really love our team and it is so evident every time we show up somewhere. Each place has long lines with people wanting our signatures on posters, shirts, basketballs and anything else they can find. I'm not complaining though -- it's an awesome feeling. Last night at Woodlawn Middle School we signed autographs for over an hour. The people there were so nice -- it was an enjoyable evening. Another thing that was kind of cool is that I got interview by one of the students for their school newspaper!

Lovin' the Kids!

Media_http3bpblogspot_fbgiw
ALLISON HIGHTOWER (11-4-09):
One of the perks of our community service is getting to hang out with so many of our fans and my favorites are the kids -- the crack me up! Last night a large number of our team went to Woodlawn Middle School to help them with a big program that including reading, basketball drills, awards and signing autographs and all night long we were entertained by are these kids. You can really tell that this was a special school by the way the students conducted themselves and how the teachers cared about everyone. But the best part of the night was hanging with the kids!

A "Slam Dunk" at Woodlawn Middle School

Media_http1bpblogspot_htmtc
COURTNEY JONES (11-4-09):

I had so much fun visiting Woodlawn Middle School yesterday! Their theme was about reading and how important it is to read in regard to education. The students where all assigned to read a book called "Slam Dunk" about a young girl learning to play hoops! In their gym we spoke to the young kids about how much hard work goes into your academics and how you must use your time wisely! It was an great honor to speak with those children. It's always nice to see them be so determined to be great and do wonderful things!!

Things I Love About The Lady Tiger Way #1

Media_http2bpblogspot_gieed
BOB STARKEY (11-03-09):
The title of this blog is The Lady Tiger Way. That concept is about a culture that was started during Coach Gunter's tenure and continues to this day under Coach Chancellor. I'm often asked what is The Lady Tiger Way and it is easy to see in its parts but difficult to simply define. It's a combination of always doing the right thing for the right reason but it also involves in doing more than is normally required. From time to time I'll list an example. For instance, this morning at 6 AM Coach Mays and myself brought the perimeter players in for some extra shooting. Andrea Kelly has had a foot injury the past week and been out of commission working out the crutches pretty good. Low and behold guess who comes in a 6 AM on her crutches to support her perimeter teammates? That's right -- Nicci Kelly! I never even thought about her coming since she couldn't dress out but that's THE LADY TIGER WAY!

Mike the Tiger - Our Live Mascot

Media_http3bpblogspot_lfnip
COURTNEY JONES (11-2-09):

The many wonders of LSU -- The name itself says a lot. The one thing that caught my attention was the live tiger we have on our campus. I mean other schools have dogs for mascots or birds, But we have a WILD tiger on our hands -- Mike the Tiger! I mean whose idea was this? I believe that it adds flavor to our campus and community. I helps bring people from all over to see what the roar is all about. Sometimes when we have 6am workouts on the track or in the PMAC we hear him roar. It’s a frightening feeling because we don’t know if he's out of his cage or just hungry! The team and I always talk about what we would do if he were to ever escape. Majority of us said run but what human can out run a Tiger? Then there’s the option of playing dead, but where would that leave us? I would probably be too afraid to even sit still that long.

LOVE THAT TIGER SPIRIT

Media_http3bpblogspot_uliiw
COURTNEY JONES (10-28-09):
How lovely it is to be an LSU Tiger. Every Saturday during football season the fans show so much support. From tailgating all day to their pets. As we (the team) were making our way to the game we noticed this couple with these awesome looking dogs. What made them so special was that they had the words LSU and TIGERS in their fur. We were so amazed that we just had to take a picture. To me that shows a lot about them and that they really love LSU!

My First Boozar

TAYLOR BOOZE (10-27-09):

Tonight the Lady Tigers participated in the Boozar held in the Carl Maddox Fieldhouse. Kids came out dressed in their Halloween costumes and mask ready to meet and greet all the athletes, mainly to take the candy though! Their were some pretty nifty and creative costumes out there tonight, but none of them could top Coach Chancellors Elvis Presley imitation! I must say he was very impressive! Overall, It was a fun and positive enviroment for the kids.

Great Time at the Boozar Tonight

ERICA WILLIAMS (10-27-09):

I really enjoyed the Boozar. I enjoy interacting with the children and seeing what creative costumes their parents come up with. We also had a guest appearance by the King, Elvis Presley (coach) it was really nice being able to hang out with the King and hand out candy to the kids putting a smile on their face!
