IN FOCUS: LEARNING TO LEAD
SPORTS INFORMATION DEPARTMENT (10-28-09):
Here's a sneak peak of an article that will run on Allison Hightower this weekend in the football game program written by Elizabeth Stuart in our Sports Information Department:
An all-encompassing force, women’s basketball senior Allison Hightower is the total package that runs the game on both ends of the court. Hightower blazes through the paint, launching a high arching jumper that stuns defenders, and with 76 blocked shots, the most-ever by an LSU guard, she presents an equal but opposite defensive challenge.
LSU coach Van Chancellor named Hightower the “face of the team” for the 2009-10 season, and it is a role for which Hightower’s predecessors groomed her well.
The Arlington, Texas native’s saga at LSU began in the fall of 2006. As a freshman, Hightower played alongside future WNBA stars Sylvia Fowles, Quianna Chaney and Erica White. The newcomer worked into the paint in all 38 games, and during her first season with the Lady Tigers, Hightower saw a Final Four appearance, the fourth-straight for the team. Watching the seasoned veterans, Hightower learned more than shooting techniques and how to work inside the lane.
“Sylvia always led by example on and off the court,” Hightower recalled. “I just wanted to one day be able to carry on and keep the legacy going.”
