COACH STARKEY: Later today we will have one of our Lady Tigers post about our afternoon at the Lester Roberts Center yesterday.  We took some some of our student-athletes there as part of our partnership with BREC.  What I wanted to spend some time is Quianna Chaney who joined us yesterday.  Q is one of my all-time favorite Lady Tigers and not because of her ability to shoot the 3-ball but because she has a great understand of her role as a Lady Tiger and takes great pride in giving back.  She is a "must-have" coach each summer at our camps.  First, because she is enthusiastic in being around young people and second, because she does a great job of teaching.  I think it was special for her to be at the Lester Roberts Center because it has housed some of our great LSU Tigers.  Garrett and Collis Temple along with Glen Davis, Randy Deval and Tyrus Thomas (among others) all spend a lot of hours there playing for the Sports Academy.  Another name that we all know, Seimone Augustus also played a lot of basketball there  -- and so did Quianna Chaney.

It didn't hit me until yesterday morning that Q might want to go with us so I send her a quick text and within 30 seconds I had a reply, "I'd love to go Coach."  And so Q joined our team and as always did a wonderful job.  She's make an excellent coach one day.

Even more testament of her love for paying forward and wanting to help young people is that this morning she is on the road to do the same thing at a school in Mississippi.

Thanks Q -- for being you!

Tue, 06 Jul 2010 10:10:00 -0700 Thanks to all our campers! http://lsuwbkb.posterous.com/thanks-to-all-our-campers http://lsuwbkb.posterous.com/thanks-to-all-our-campers

it is finally time to say good-bye to all our campers.  It was a great summer of basketball and we'd like to thanks two very special groups of people.

#1 The campers!  You guys were outstanding...tons of energy and enthusiasm...always asking good questions...wonderful work ethic.  Keep up that type of attitude and you will not only improve as a basketball player but also grow as young person.

#2 The parents (or the ones responsible to making it all happen)!  We greatly believe in our camp and how we teach and work with young people.  We know tha tyou feel the same way or you wouldn't have sent your child to us.  The dedication of the family is not lost on our staff and we want to say thanks!

If we could pass along just a little advice to all you campers out there it would be:

First, keep working on your game.  We have an oustanding camp but the only way you can truly improve is to continually work on your game now that camp is over.

Second, always be a good team member.  Listen to your coach.  Support your teammates.  And remember, you can be a good "teammate" in your home as well.  Listen to your parents and support your other family members.

HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!

I'm always asked what makes the Van Chancellor Basketball Camp special and I think certainly one of the premier reasons is the involvement of the staff and the Lady Tigers.  Starting with Coach Chancellor, there is a heavy Lady Tiger coaching staff flavor in every camp.   As the Lady Tiger camp season comes to a close this week, their love of teaching is obvious as they spend so much time with the youngest of their campers.

"I've always enjoyed camp," says Coach Chancellor.  "The enthusiasm and energy of the young campers is contagious."  Coach Chancellor starts out each morning taking the entire camp through defensive stance and slides and then works his away around the baskets to teach, officiate and even spend time with the parents in the gym.

"For me, it is about the opportunity to teach," said Bob Starkey. "This is such an informative stage in their basketball careers and it means a lot to me that our program can pass something on to them that hopefully they will utilize down the road to improve."  Starkey is the director of the camp will also serviing as a guest lecturer.

"I absolutely love the set up of our camps," relayed Travis Mays.  "There is a great core of teaching but it is wrapped around games and contests that give the came a great deal of balance.  I think the way we execute our camp is why so many campers enjoy it."  Mays, a former coach on the WNBA level gave a guest lecturer on his specialty Tuesday -- shooting.

"This is my first go around so it has been an exciting experience for me," said Joni Crenshaw.  "The way the came is so highly orgnaized is impressive.  But nothing is more enjoyable to me than watching all the young kids have so much fun -- enjoying the game of basketball."  Crenshaw is slated to be a guest lecturer on Wednesday but can be found every day working at baskets with the campers.

ADRIENNE WEBB: This week I had the pleasure of experiencing yet another LSU Lady Tiger Basketball Camp.  All the campers (who ranged from grades 6 through 12) really enjoyed themselves and learned a great deal.  Some even said they couldn’t wait until next year!  This was my first year to get hands-on experience working the camp.  It was a lot of fun to coach the campers, and extremely rewarding see them learning what we taught.

KATHERINE GRAHAM: This past week we have had two of the best camps I have worked in my years at LSU. These campers were special, because they were by far the most interactive. They displayed a thirst for learning and an interest in what makes us Lady Tigers. In the College Prep Camp we got a chance to meet a lot of new and talented players and learn a lot about them. The campers got a chance to be a Lady Tiger for about 24 hours. We showed them some of the drills we do in practice to develop certain skills. Also, they were able to see how we prepare for games and had team meetings and mock halftimes with Coach Chanellor. So for 24 hours, the coaching staff and the players treated the campers as if they were a part of our team, which I think helped us create personal relationships with most of them.
