LSU's win over Vanderbilt was important to the Lady Tigers in building their post-season resume. But it also was their annual Pink Zone game which saw the both teams, fans, cheerleaders and the band decked out in pink -- even Mike the Tiger got in on the action.

The WBCA Pink Zone initiative is a global, unified effort for the WBCA's nation of coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The window set aside for this year's initiative is February 12-21. The WBCA's charity of choice is the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer Fund®, in partnership with The V Foundation.

Donations were accepted at the game benefitting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Donors could pledge a chosen amount for each point scored by the Lady Tigers or they could donate a flat amount that they saw fit

Admission for LSU students was free of charge with a valid LSU ID. LSU women's basketball will donate $1 to Baton Rouge area cancer research for each LSU student in attendance on Thursday night. LSU associate head coach Bob Starkey had also announced that he and his wife Sherie, a breast cancer survivor, are donating $1 to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure for every LSU student in attendance at Thursday's game.

No doubt every school has a mascot but at LSU we think Mike the Tiger is the absolute best. Besides having a live Mike the Tigers that lives outside guarding the PMAC, we also have a lot of students that work hard to bring Mike alive at various events -- and the do an amazing job!

They don't just attend games but just about every event imaginable on and off campus and give LSU tremendous visibility. There is nothing that brings a smile quicker to an LSU fan (any age) than when Mike walks up and extends his paw for a shake.

Mike even has his own website: http://www.mikethetiger.com/

He is also on Twitter & Facebook

ALLISON HIGHTOWER (12-14-09):
One of the new things that our marketing department has started this year is that we will have two or three Lady Tigers signing autographs after each weekend game. After the game, we run into the locker room to hear what the coaches have to say and then hustle up to the concourse to sign autographs. I must say I was shocked at how many fans stayed around -- just goes to show how great the Lady Tiger fans are and it's just another reason we love you all so much!

TOM HARLUCOWICZ (11-23-09):

Saturday’s Lady Tiger game versus Houston was an important game in and of itself but was also very important because it was Special Olympics Day at the Maravich Center. LSU had the chance to host a number of athletes, coaches, volunteers and friends of Special Olympics Louisiana and it turned out to be great day.

Seventeen Special Olympic athletes who participate in basketball were involved in the pregame ball exchange, which is a Lady Tiger gameday tradition. Additionally, three other athletes were recognized at timeouts for their individual accomplishments. Also, halftime featured an exhibition basketball game between two teams that drew cheers from the crowd for the athlete’s tremendous ability. Special Olympics Louisiana President and CEO Pat Carpenter Bourgeois sat on the team bench and served as guest coach for the game as well.

It certainly was a pleasure to have the members of Special Olympics Louisiana at the game this past Saturday and the Lady Tigers look forward to becoming more involved with their program.

TOM HARLUKOWICZ (11-12-09):
One of my favorite projects to work on prior to each season is the team’s video that plays right before LSU’s introductions. This year was no different and I was very happy to debut this season’s video at Tuesday’s exhibition game versus Loyola.

The video, produced by Old Hat Creative based in Norman, Oklahoma, ties into this year’s “Jump on the Van Wagon” marketing campaign. If you didn’t get a chance to see it on the big screens in the Maravich Center on Tuesday, be sure to be in your seats early for Sunday’s home opener versus Centenary. The game is set to tip off at 2p.m. The video can also be seen by clicking the link below. I hope you enjoy it.

VAN CHANCELLOR (11-11-09):

Well I can imagine there were a lot of LSU students that were surprised this morning when they jumped on the bus and saw their women's basketball coach hanging out with them -- passing out snacks, giving away t-shirts and talking Lady Tiger Basketball. Our marketing genius Tom Harlukowicz signed me up to be a guest host on Tiger Trails which is our student transit system. And as has been the case with everything else this fall, Tom nailed it. I had a great time meeting and talking to the students. Going into my third year at LSU there is nothing that impressed me more than the spirit of this student body. LSU is a very special place and is so because of our students.

You've no doubt noticed that your Lady Tigers have been out in the community a great deal and especially involved with young kids in schools. It all be design and part of a program that Lady Tigers have started called GPA -- which stands for Goals, Perseverance and Achievement. They are joined in partnership with the East Baton Rouge Parish School System.

"One of the important things about being a collegiate basketball program is the way you can effect young people and communities beyond the basketball court," said Van Chancellor. "Giving back has always been a priority for Lady Tiger Basketball and we are proud to continue that legacy."

Despite being at a number of the same appearances already, today was Coach Chancellor’s first ride in the Van Wagon. As you would expect, Coach did not disappoint.

This afternoon, I drove Coach through campus to show off his new ride to the LSU student body. A few impromptu stops were also made to hand out the new Van Is My Homeboy t-shirts, which are hot off the presses. Needless to say, there were quite a few surprised faces when Coach Chancellor was hanging out of the Van Wagon giving out t-shirts.

Make sure to watch The Lady Tiger Way blog, twitter and www.JumpOnTheVanWagon.com to find out where Coach Chancellor and the Van Wagon will be next, handing out t-shirts and meeting the fans.

COURTNEY JONES (11-2-09):

The many wonders of LSU -- The name itself says a lot. The one thing that caught my attention was the live tiger we have on our campus. I mean other schools have dogs for mascots or birds, But we have a WILD tiger on our hands -- Mike the Tiger! I mean whose idea was this? I believe that it adds flavor to our campus and community. I helps bring people from all over to see what the roar is all about. Sometimes when we have 6am workouts on the track or in the PMAC we hear him roar. It’s a frightening feeling because we don’t know if he's out of his cage or just hungry! The team and I always talk about what we would do if he were to ever escape. Majority of us said run but what human can out run a Tiger? Then there’s the option of playing dead, but where would that leave us? I would probably be too afraid to even sit still that long.

As the lead person for the marketing and promoting of LSU Lady Tiger Basketball, Van Chancellor is the dream head coach! Whenever you have someone in the lead position that has charisma and charm it's a good thing but the bonus is that Coach Chancellor genuinely loves people. In his two years, he has never said no to an appearance no matter how large or small the group or how early or late the start time. I know that during the season he is going hard to get our team ready to play but he has a great appreciation for helping us grow our fan base.

I always get excited about Mall Ball because I love getting out and talking to the LSU fans. One of the most enjoyable things about coming to Louisiana State University is finding out the great passion everyone has to everything from football to gumbo -- and of course, for Lady Tiger Basketball! Today though we got an extra surpise with a new "assistant." Tiffany Creel heads out tickets for women's basketball at LSU and she has an incredible work ethic and a great personality. She makes a difference in our program. Our fans know her by her first name because she cares about them. Well, today she introduced the Lady Tiger fans to her daughter Ava and Ava stole the show. She is just as cute as she can be and we all enjoyed her!

Just as we promised -- here's Phase II or our new marketing strategy. It is a new website to help promote Lady Tiger Basketball and will have a lot of entertaining venues for the fans as well as updating them on everything going on with the team, on and off the court. Again, we want to thank Craig Pintens, Tom Harlukowicz and Jason Feirman and all their staffs for the work on the website and van.

It is up and running and only a click away:

The new website focuses on the excitement of LSU’s season and it will be updated on a continuous basis. JumpOnTheVanWagon.com includes a video featuring the 2009-10 Lady Tigers and head coach Van Chancellor, ticket options, a promotional schedule and links to all of the Lady Tigers social media outlets (Twitter, The Lady Tiger Way Blog). One of the unique features of the website is that fans will be able to upload photos of Lady Tiger games from their mobile phones and cameras onto the website.

“JumpOnTheVanWagon.com is an exciting and interactive platform for Lady Tiger fans,” said Tom Harlukowicz, Marketing and Group Tickets Coordinator at LSU. “It will definitely get everyone anxious for the upcoming season.”
