Mon, 28 Jun 2010 13:39:00 -0700 KG writes about Ashley's wedding and her Lady Tiger legacy! http://lsuwbkb.posterous.com/kg-writes-about-ashleys-wedding-and-her-lady http://lsuwbkb.posterous.com/kg-writes-about-ashleys-wedding-and-her-lady

KATERINE GRAHAM: Saturday, June 26th I had the privilege of attending the wedding ceremony of a two former LSU Tigers; former Lady Tiger Ashley Thomas and former football player for the National Championship team Tremaine Johnson. The ceremony and reception both took place on campus and was heavily influenced with Louisiana tradition. An intimate wedding was marvelous to say the least...everything was absolutely gorgeous, especially Ashley's wedding gown, and Tremaine cleaned up nice as well - LOL!

At the reception the Louisiana tradition was evident when the wedding party was introduced doing the second line while everyone else was seated waving white clothes engraved with, "Laissez Les Bon Temps Roulez" which means let the good times roll, and roll they did. At the reception Quianna Chaney, Rashonta "Tae Tae" LaBlanc, Florance Williams, Latear Eason, Courtney Jones, LaSondra "Boogie" Barrett and myself was able to share a table and talk about our Lady Tiger experiences.

As I sat there I was elated with joy for Ashley and began thinking about all the things she has helped me with during my tenure at LSU. I remember the times as a freshman when I did not know if she liked me or not. She has a very serious demeanor on the court and taught me how important doing the little things were.

Ashley was never the person to get a lot of the attention for her play, but in my opinion she was a HUGE key to the team's success. I would always say, "A-Town is always in the right place at the right time." Later I realized it was just because she played EXTREMELY hard, and was able to think the game which helped her become the player she was. Off the court I have turned to her for advise academically, and personally with future plans. She has shown me the importance of dedication in the class room as well as on the court which will allow you great opportunities in the job market.

When we lost nine seniors my freshman year, Ashley was named as the graduate assistant and helped bridge the gap between the past to the present and help with the learning curve of the basketball concepts. Although she is a post player I guess I can say she was a great role model - LOL! (that one was for Coach Starkey)

Ashley "A-Town" Johnson is the true meaning of a Lady Tiger and I am thankful for her leadership, knowledge, patience and understanding. Congratulations to them both again and wishing them the best wishes on their fairytale story forever and ever!

Chile was extremely short, their tallest player was 5'8" and they played really physical defense to make up for their size. They were great outside shooters. Brazil was extremely physical on both ends of the court. They had decent size and were well conditioned. I did alright aganst both teams , I dont know how many points I had against Chile but I had 9 against Brazil. It was intersting to listen to the other teams communicate with themselves. I'm anxious for the tournament to start on the 23rd of this month.

Sun, 20 Jun 2010 06:46:00 -0700 Happy Father's Day -- The Lady Tiger Way! http://lsuwbkb.posterous.com/happy-fathers-day-the-lady-tiger-way http://lsuwbkb.posterous.com/happy-fathers-day-the-lady-tiger-way

LASONDRA BARRETT: I would like to wish my father, David Barrett, a Happy Fathers Day!!!! He has taught me many life lessons that I use now and will use in the future.  He always taught me to stand for something or fall for nothing. He's educated me on many things from history to cooking. My dad was the first to put a basketball in my hand and get me started on my basketball journey.  Also, with the help of my mom he encouraged me when he saw my potential at the age of 10.  My dad is and has always been a great father that was there for me through the good and bad times.  The best part about him is he tells me what I need to hear instead of what I want to hear.  I love my dad with all my heart and again Happy Fathers Day to all Fathers!!!!

KATHERINE GRAHAM: As fathers day approaches and I reflect on all the things my dad has done for my family and a few characteristics come to mind are a supporter, motivator, friend, but most importantly a mentor. Growing up in Birmingham during the Civil Rights movement, my dad was determined to create a better future for his family. A lot of the life lessons he has learned and shared with me is a result of his parents and what they instilled in him. First of all he is a Christian that was raised in the church and taught that the most important priorities in life are God first, and family second. When many see my father they see a large man of statue, that can be intimidating, however being a daddy's girl I see the kind, gentle side and can see past the intimidating exterior. Others may feel he is a man of very few words, however when talking with me we can talk for hours. During my freshman year of high school my dad would drop me off, and also pick me up after basketball practice. These were "our" times to spend together without interruptions. I would ask a simply question, and receive many life lessons about finance, school, and life decisions. My father may not realize this but he has set the standard EXTREMELY high for my husband. He does whatever he can for my family, and is always there to support myself as well as my brother. There is no way to estimate how much money my parents have spent traveling to football games for my brother and up and down the highways to come visit me or to catch a game or two. My dad is one person that can understand me without having to say a word. Sometimes our conversations last a while and other times they don't, but each time I see him, get a text before each game, or just hear his voice I know I have all his love, support, and I am very appreciative for a man like him in my life. I know he is probably reading this right now with a smile on his face and I want to just say thank you and I love you much!

P.S. Thank you mother, I love you too! Lol

DESTINI HUGHES: When I think about my dad, I think of a big...big...teddy bear! lol...I say that because my dad can look and be real intimidating sometimes, but he's really just a big softy. My dad is a high school basketball coach, and he actually coached me when I was growing up. From the outside looking in, it would appear that my dad was really hard and tough on me...and I'm not denying that he wasn't because that's one of the reasons why I'm so disciplined in my work ethic now. But what most people didn't see behind that big bark of his, was the compassion, love, and encouragement that he gave me each and every day. I have to give credit to my mom as well because on the days he was really hard on me, she always had my back :) (thanks mama!). I'm actually a daddy's girl (still am too)...off the court I loved hanging out with my dad! Even though he can be a little corny at times, I see where I get my goofiness from. Well actually my mom is a little goofy too so never mind. But anyway, I just want to wish my daddy a Happy Father's Day and I'm glad God blessed me with such an awesome dad! Love you!

 P.S. I love you too mama! :)

COURTNEY JONES: Thursday night Coach Chancellor invited the Lady Tigers to his home to watch the Final game of the NBA finals. This had been a game talked about all over the world for days and me personally I was ready to see the ending results. Out of the entire team 2 of the team members where Lakers fans, one of them being me of course. Throughout the game so much smart talk was being spread and there was so much aggression in the room you would have thought you were at a WWE wrestling match. I had nerves like I was actually about to play, that’s how serious it was. During the entire game the Lakers could not catch a lead until the 4th quarter. What people don’t realize is that the LA Lakers are a second half team and most of their points come from the 3rd and 4th quarters.  I wasn’t worried because I knew Kobe Bryant wouldn’t let his team down and they would pull it together for the win. I wanted to rub it in my teammates face but I remained humble in hopes that they one day understand that the Lakers are the best in the league right now. It’s all about the Purple&Gold!!!

Hey Lady Tiger Fans, as you know Championships are won in the off-season. We have been working really hard since the season came to an end. Our Spring weightlifting workouts have been going really well. We have the best strength and conditioning coach and Coach (Melissa) Moore will always make sure she gets the absolute best out of us. We have been doing a lot of core work and power lifts to work on our explosiveness. We are really working hard to come back stronger next season. And for the perimeter players, a lot of us are lifting as much as the post players or even more. So post players I'm going to need you to step it up. Just kidding the post players are doing a great job. Overall the team is doing a great job.

What I did during spring break was travel to Panama City, Florida and did some things that I really never had gotten a chance to do... like going to the Ripley's Believe It Or Not Museum. It was a lot of fun we saw a lot of great things like the tallest man in the world (who he was 8'11), part of the Wall of Berlin and a Giant Hurricane Ball form Hurricane Betsy. It a was very fun experience and I really enjoyed it.

Hello Lady Tiger Fans!!!
We are reporting live from Durham, North Carolina where we start the first round of the NCAA tournament. So far we have taken a big plane and gotten to travel with the band and the cheerleaders. It was a very smooth flight until we almost landed and then all of the sudden we shot up like a rocket! Come to find out we had to wait for Vice President Joe Biden to take off safely. I don't know about the rest of the team but Joe had me scared, I think he could have waited until we landed so we could meet him and he could meet us, but I understand security is tight! We landed safely and went straight to dinner for a nice meal and a little dessert at that. After that we went straight to the Hilton hotel where they welcomed us with open arms and a lot of purple and gold. This morning we had practice on Duke's home floor, it was very small but I like it! We had a short practice and got a lot done. I liked that we had a lot of energy and effort in practice and overall I thought we had a good solid practice before we play a very good Harford team tomorrow morning. The rest of the day we will have study hall, dinner, film, and sleep to prepare and get ready for tomorrow's game. Until next time GEAUX TIGERS!

Although Boogie doesn't quite have the moves like Allison, she held her ground as well. DESTINI HUGHES:

The Hall of Fame was an exciting experience. My favorite part was the video on the history of women's basketball, because it educated me on how females started playing the game and gave information that I never knew about before. My other favorite part was the behind the back skill challenge! I probably could have stayed at that station for hours, it was pretty fun. I really like that kind of stuff so I had a blast. Everything else was pretty cool to see and view all that women have accomplished so far in the game of basketball. It was also funny to see a picture of Coach Chancellor in his younger days...he was actually a nice looking young man believe it or not. But all in all, I had fun and am very thankful that I got the opportunity to see it!
NOTE: During our recent trip to Knoxville to play the University of Tennessee, we took our team to the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame. From time to time over the next few weeks, we will have our players blog their thoughts on this special experience.

I really enjoyed the video at the beginning of the tour...it really made it interesting wanting to know more as we went along. It has such a great blend of history and entertainment. I learned so much about our game that I hadn't realized. It was definitely a special trip.

ADRIENNE WEBB:

Today was a really special day for me. We started the day with a visit to the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame (WBHOF) in Knoxville, TN. We learned about the history of Women’s Basketball, and saw the pictures of players and coaches who have been inducted over the years. Our own Coach Chancellor became a member in 2001. We also toured the Rotunda to view the Ring of Honor where every year they display the jerseys of players who have made an impact on the game on a high school, collegiate, and professional level. As the 2009 Alabama Gatorade Player of the Year, I am honored to have my jersey hanging with those selected for this season. Allison Hightower’s LSU jersey is also featured with this elite group for the outstanding career she has had thus far. Even though I had visited the WBHOF last summer, this visit was even more special because I was able to share it with my teammates. I also think the visit inspired me to play with greater intensity in the big game vs. UT, by helping me focus on the things that helped me achieve that honor. With hard work, desire, and determination, I hope to be represented there again in the future.

KATHERINE GRAHAM

On Friday, February 19, we had a guess speaker in my Kinesiology Sports Marketing class. This special individual topic was about social networking and being able to target different people and all the things the program he is affiliated with uses to reach a mass array of fans. The individual was, as Jenni Peters calls him, "Bobby" Starkey. That's right Coach Starkey came and talked to our class about the programs attempt to reach coaches, players, and fans on a personal level and make them more interested in the Lady Tiger program. I personally got a first hand explanation as to why he is so addicted to twitter and blogging and realize that it is not just for social networking, but also a way to create an interest. Overall Coach Starkey did an excellent job of informing LSU students, and if coaching doesn't work out he can always fall back on teaching as a profession. Until next time Lady Tiger fans!

SWAYZE BLACK
After being given a day off following a big win against Vanderbilt, you would think none of the team wants to be around any of the coaches. However Tia, Boogie, Erica and I were honored with the chance to have Coach Starkey as a guest speaker in our Kinesiology 3801 class. Coach Starkey came in and informed our class of the many different options we have in the media world as far as advertising and marketing in sports. We were taught different ways to keep people entertained and even how to draw big audiences. Coach Starkey has done a great job of keeping people updated through his twitter, facebook, and our lady tiger blog just to name a few. He has websites available for players and coaches of all sports to entertain, inform, and also motivate. I'm pretty sure many of you have already been keeping up with a couple of these websites and following Coach Starkey, but for those of you that haven't I would strongly advise that you do. This would be an easy way to see what it is like in the day of a Lady Tiger and learn other things that are very inspiring and that may be helpful to you. Hope you all enjoy tiger fans!

This past Monday was a day off from basketball practice so the majority of the team decided to visit their schools that had adopted them as part of our GPA (Goals, Perseverance, Achievement) Program.

KATHERINE GRAHAM:
As you all may know we are partnering with some schools in the East Baton Rouge Parish schools doing a GPA program. Well on Monday Feb. 2, I had the privilege of visiting my school again. Like any other visit I was greeted with a smile form all the students and staff! My first stop was in a First grade class where they had many questions, and were eager for me to read a book to them. I enjoyed the book as well because I was able to become a child again. I'm not sure of the exact name of the book, but it was a spin off of the "Three Little Pigs" story. However, it was the Wolf's version. It was quite interesting to see the other side of the story. After I left that class I went to visit the rest of the first grade classes and some Kindergarten classes (during nap time) I wish they had those in college! The purpose of this visit was to remind the students of Woodlawn Elementary to come support us on February 8 as we face Ole Miss, and also to encourage them to continue their success in the classroom. Until next time Lady Tiger fans!

LASONDRA BARRETT:
Today at Scottlandville Elementary school I reminded the students about our Bookmark Game, in which they received two tickets to our game Sunday against Ole Miss. The tickets were given to each student to promote education and learning within our GPA program throughout the East Baton Rouge Parish schools. Also, I paid a visit to the kindergarten classes to read them a Dr. Seuss book about exercising and living healthy. Afterward, I went to each class to remind them about the importance of getting an education, staying in school, and coming to see the Lady Tigers play Sunday!!

JASMINE NELSON:
Today Boogie and I visited Scottlanville Elementary. I had lots of fun with those kids. From the time we walked in the door they smiled ear to ear. We sat and read a Dr. Seuss book to the kindergartens and we went around and reminded the other grades about their free tickets Sunday to come out and enjoy the game against Ole Miss. The kids were well behaved and respectful. They answered "yes ma'am" to everything that was said from the teachers and us. That really impressed me the most.

SWAYZE BLACK:
Today I took a visit to LaSalle Elementary to catch up with my group of kids. Once I arrived I was told I would be in the gym assisting the PE coach in various activities but once I got to the gym I only watched the kids compete in different races. I also cheered them on and gave a few pointers on how they could win. It was really fun watching the kids have such a good time. They really enjoyed my company and asked me to join in on their PE games on my next visit. I can't wait!

TAYLOR BOOZE:
Today Taylor Turnbow and myself visited a local middle school here in baton rouge. We got a chance to speak with all the young teens and tell them all about our program and answered any questions they had for us. My most memorable part of the day was when we were able to talk with the boys basketball team whose record is now 0-4! We just tried to give them some encouraging thoughts and told them to keep practicing and playing together. They really seemed to enjoy our talk and hopefully they can pull out a win next game! It was fun to put a smile on all their faces and I hope they enjoyed it as much as I did!

ERICA WILLIAMS:
It's always a joy visiting at Brookstown. Today I got to get a little up close and personal with a group of kids sharing stories and answering many good questions. We got a little game of free throws in girls vs. boys. (of course the girls won) Today was really exciting, I can't wait to go back to see what they've been up to.

ANDREA KELLY:
Today I was not only able to visit Winbourne, the school I usually attend, but another school with Erica and Tia. The group of kids we talked to was a 4th grade p.e. class of about 15 boys and girls. The class challenged the three of us to a free throw contest and for every shot they missed they had to run a lap around the court. We didn't shoot, instead the boys went against the girls and let's just say collectively the number of laps were up to 13...but they didn't have to run them because Erica knocked them off by shooting some free throws too:) After that we all sat down close to each other and their coach encouraged them to use this opportunity to ask questions they wouldn't be able to ask in a big crowd. They all had great questions and we shared some laughs with each other while at the same time telling them the importance of having a great attitude and conduct. One girl in particular expressed how she has dreams of one day becoming a nurse and it was a joy to give her some knowledge about that because medicine is the field I want to go in.
